The world of laptops has become highly specialized, and there are many different types of laptops available. The inspiration for this article came from my 12-year-old daughter, who has dreams of becoming an architect. It is important to get her a laptop that allows her to explore architecture and get her journey off to a good start. The result of these explorations is this list of the top 20 best laptops for architects and architecture students to help you narrow down your choices, too!
Here is a list of the 10 best laptops for architects. I will cover each laptop (and 10 additional laptops) in depth later in the article:

Specs and Minimum Requirements
The first step in choosing the right laptop for architects is understanding the minimum requirements that the system needs. Laptops are now made with a certain audience in mind. The best laptop for podcasting will not be the best computer for architecture. Let’s take a look at what you should consider when choosing the best laptop to draw house plans.
Software and Rendering
Architects often use programs such as AutoCAD, Vectorworks, Autodesk, and ArchiCAD. These software programs require a lot of resources. When you make a change to the drawing, you have to render it, and this process can take some time. You do not want a slow computer that makes you wait for 30 minutes every time you make a change. Fast computers that are made for architectural applications can render a drawing in five minutes.
Laptops for architecture must be powerful enough for the job, but most people also need to consider their budget especially students. The difficulty is splitting the difference between a budget laptop and one that has enough power. Fortunately, there are many choices available that fall into the budget laptops category.

Size Counts: RAM and Storage
You need to make sure that you have enough storage space and RAM for architectural software. As a student, you might only need about an 8GB RAM, but when you become a professional, you will need at least a 16GB RAM. Getting something that will carry you though into your early days as a professional is probably a good choice if you can afford it.
Speed counts, too, and you will need at least a quad-core processor for rendering unless you render in the cloud. A 6-8 core high-performance processor is optimal. At least 4Ghz is recommended, but some acceptable choices have other technologies, such as a turbo boost, which can mimic a faster processor.
When it comes to storage, at least 256GB SSD is the recommended minimum size for students. When you become an architect, you will need at least 512GB. You might also opt for 256GB and a 1TB HDD storage. Some of the choices on this list have a base storage that you can upgrade later.
Another consideration when choosing the best computer for architectural drawing is the type of drive. Solid state drives (SSD) are typically considered the best for the heavy software programs that are required. Some architects and creatives choose gaming laptops for their fast processors and lightning-fast graphics, which also makes them the best laptop to draw house plans.
Graphics Card and Display
Getting the wrong graphics card or a slow graphics card, can create a poor experience, even if you have the most powerful computer available. If you have a graphics card that is too small, it does not matter how powerful your computer is, you will experience lag.
The same thing goes for your monitor and display. You need to be able to see the drawing in detail, so you need a picture that is crisp and clear. That is why an ultrawide monitor is an excellent investment for this type of work.
Mac vs. PC vs. Surface Book
One of the most common basic questions when choosing the best laptop for architects is whether to choose Mac, PC, or Surface Book. All of these choices have advantages and disadvantages. These choices in many versions, so the choice is more complicated than just Mac, PC, or Surface Book.
One thing to consider is that Macs changed drastically in the mid-2000s when they began using Intel processors. Macs have plenty of standard hardware that comes with them, such as an integrated high-performance graphics cards and built-in webcams. They also have integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
One of the disadvantages of a Mac is that you must use one type of dedicated port, a Thunderbolt 3. With a PC, you still have a wide selection of ports, including HDMI, an SD card slot, and a USB-A port. This makes PCs more compatible and able to integrate with other equipment. PCs also tend to come with more memory than Macs. However, Macs are known for their lightning-fast graphics speed and clarity.
When it comes to operating systems, Mac and PC have been getting closer to each other over time. Now, most software for architects has the cross-platform compatibility to work on both. Macs tend to be thinner and more lightweight, too.
Many people like the Surface Book Pro as their favorite for weighty software programs. The attractiveness of the Surface Book Pro is that you can remove the tablet from the keyboard for comfort and portability. The Surface Book Pro has additional ports, and there are rumors that they intend to add a Thunderbolt 3 port in the future. When it comes down to which laptop is the best laptop to draw house plans, 3D models, and other architectural work, these three are well-matched, and it is a matter of personal choice.
